Best Friends Spreads Gospel on West Coast Trip
May. 13, 2013
LCU Acappella group made stops in Texas, Arizona, California and New Mexico
According to the Best Friends page on the Lubbock Christian University website the mission of the group, formed in 1983, is to "spread the good news of Jesus Christ through song." On their recent road trip to the west coast the group did just that, making stops in El Paso, Glendale (AZ), Escondido (CA), Malibu (CA), Tucson (AZ) and Albuquerque (NM).
"Best Friends usually tours the second week of May, after graduation," said the groups director, Windy Babcock. "When we found out that the (LCU) Chamber Singers were participating in the Ascending Voice III (at Pepperdine), Dr. (Philip) Camp and I felt it would be good to combine the trips. I have been contacting various churches since January, inquiring about their willingness to host Best Friends."
The trip began with a performance at Westside Church of Christ in El Paso on May 5th and stops along the way leading to the event at Pepperdine helped to spread the word. The group also met many LCU alumni and had the opportunity to share God's message in song.
"We met many alumni from El Paso to Malibu," said Babcock of the trip. "The reception we received from the churches was wonderful. We really felt like part of their families."
Best Friends 2012-13 is made up of Caleb Blakeney, Amanda Bloomer, Trey Dye, Ian DuPont, Bobby Hooten, Devon Langford, Kelsea McNeill, Andi Rose, Jesse Walton and Kaylee Wilson. Nathan Anderson handles all the sound for the group as well as assisting Babcock in many areas.
"We had a wonderful opportunity to share God's message in song throughout many states," Babcock said in summarizing the recent trip. "It was great to see God taking care of us and showing us His love through others! We also enjoyed the beautiful scenery God's created."
Best Friends will perform the National Anthem on Saturday night as part of the LCU Foundation event "Dynasty of Faith" in Midland. They will also be performing at the upcoming Encounter 2013 camp on the LCU campus.
The group tours on selected Wednesdays and on weekends during the school year. They sing at schools, church events, youth rallies, camps, retreats and other events.
