Checking in briefly with Chap and Lady Chap Athletics from the past weekend
Lady Chaps Volleyball
The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaps volleyball team hosted the 2013 Windmark Insurance Heartland/Lonestar Conference Crossover at the Rip Griffin Center over the past weekend. Although the end result wasn't what the Lady Chaps were looking for, posting a 2-3 record, the first ever Heartland Conference victory was achieved in the first match the team competed in against Texas A&M International University.
Standouts for the Lady Chaps were Mallory Powell, Kyleigh Lucia, Amy Edwards and Kacey Deterding.
Lady Chaps Soccer
Facing off against former conference foe, Wayland Baptist University, the Lady Chaps saw their 14-game non-conference win streak come to an end. The first of two goals scored by the Pioneers also snapped Chap goalkeeper Lauren Story's shutout streak of over 230 minutes of play.
The Lady Chaps will take the pitch again this Tuesday as they travel to face non-conference foe West Texas A&M in Canyon.
Wayland Baptist's Erik Luzanilla made his Pioneer debut by tallying a hat trick and leading his squad in a 3-0 defeat of the LCU men’s soccer team. In a face off of former conference opponents and rivals, the Chaps were outshot 19-10 and Luzanillla had 11 of those for WBU.
The Chaps would also take on Huston-Tillotson University over the weekend but even after 110 minutes of play, the two squads left the pitch with a 0-0 tie. The tie leaves the Chaps record at 1-1-1. The Chaps will look to overcome their 200-plus minute scoreless drought as they take on West Texas A&M on Monday in Canyon.
Chaps/Lady Chaps Cross Country
Both the LCU men's and women's Cross Country teams competed in the Texas Tech Open, held locally at Meadowbrook Golf Course, this past weekend.
The Lady Chaps were one of 13 teams competing in the 5K and finished just ahead of South Plains College. Texas Tech, the host team, would come away with the victory behind Sharlene Nickle. Top finishers for the Lady Chaps were Gladys Miranda, Daisy Tuwei and Devin Caballero.
The men's division saw Texas Tech's Kennedy Kithuka take first place in the event, but strong showings for the Chaps came from Isaac Placencia, Joey Villareal, Trey Bale and Carsten Russell.
Both the men's and women's Cross Country squads will compete in the Cowboy Jamboree, hosted by Oklahoma State, in Stillwater (OK) on September 28th.
