For Christmas, one of the presents I received was a book written by noted financial guru Dave Ramsey.
Dave Ramsey sheds light on what it takes to manage our money wisely.
I listen to Mr. Ramsey on the radio when I have the opportunity, but getting that book has renewed my desire to maintain a good plan for my own finances and start the New Year off on the right foot. This semester I also happen to be taking a Personal Financial Planning class at Lubbock Christian University, so I am starting to feel like I?m supposed to be catching on to something here. The Bible is full of references and instructions concerning earthly wealth and wise stewardship and, since everyone is making other kinds of resolutions this time of year, why shouldn't we resolve to put the talents God gives us to their best use, also? I'm not finished reading The Total Money Makeover yet, but here are some truthful points from Dave Ramsey that I've come across while skimming through it:
* "Winning at money is 80 percent behavior and 20 percent head knowledge."
* "We live in a land of plenty, and that has until recently lulled a large percentage of Americans to sleep, thinking everything will be 'okay.'" Things won't be okay unless you make them that way. Your destiny and your dignity are up to you."
* "The average college student pays $5,000 more per year to live and eat off-campus than to live in the dorm and eat cafeteria food. Student loans were needed not to earn their degree but only to look good while getting it."
* "Always manage your own money. You should surround yourself with a team of people smarter than you, but you make the decisions."
* "I can promise you from meeting with literally thousands of millionaires that the thing the healthy ones share in common is a love of GIVING. Only the strong can help the weak, and that is true of money, too."
With the start of a new year and the Christmas shopping behind us, many people have finances on their minds. Having a faith in God and His Word gives us an interesting aspect to managing money that completely challenges what popular culture is saying. The Bible is filled with references from the Old and New Testaments concerning monetary wealth and wise stewardship - Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, the Gospels, and I Corinthians are just a few books packed with heavenly wisdom for earthly riches. There is always room to learn more and grow in any area, but especially when it comes to faith and the blessings God entrusts us with.
