Faculty Profile: Shawn Hughes

Shawn Hughes formerly taught at Lubbock Christian University in the Communications Department for several years before becoming part of the Marketing Department. He later moved to Roswell, NM where he was the CEO for the Chamber of Commerce and then opened his own advertising and video production company. Now, he is back and is teaching many of the communications classes here on campus. We had a chance to visit with him about his return to the LCU campus:

Shawn Hughes (left) has returned to Lubbock Christian University as a member of the faculty.

What made you want to get into the Communications Field?

“I have always enjoyed public speaking.” As a teenager Mr. Hughes enjoyed speaking at church and in college, discovered theater and ended up doing a follow spot with Doc (Dr. E. Don Willams, formerly Dean of the Hancock Eollege of Liberal Arts and Education and a longtime LCU faculty member. Since then he has “always been involved with theater”.

What made you want to teach again and why at LCU?

“I loved Roswell and what I was doing but when God opens the door for me career wise – it happens fast.” Mr. Hughes mentioned the unity here at LCU and said that there were “no other options.”

What do you want to get out of this year?

“This year … I want to get a pattern established and find a balance between my teaching load and my study load. I want to make sure I have time for family.”

You went to LCU as a student and have taught here before … how have things changed since you were here last?

“LCU has really matured professionally. It was always a wonderful place, but there is a heavier emphasis on the professional aspect … it is top notch.”

You have accomplished a lot in your life – is there anything that you haven’t done that you want to do?

“I have never gone hang gliding and I don’t have my PhD yet. But overall I’m very comfortable with where I am at right now.”

I am taking a few of your classes and you make them engaging and fun – do you think that making class fun is important? Why?

“Not all classes gel ... but I want us to have a good time. That is the whole process of communicating – it is about coming together.”

How important do you think a Christian education is?

“The value of a Christian education goes way beyond the information that you gather … college is about teaching you ways of thinking … by not bringing Christ into it, we are doing a disservice.”

Hopefully you get the chance to learn from this wonderful professor, just another example of the men and women chosen to lead us here at Lubbock Christian University.
