First Friday Art Trail ... More Than Art

First Friday Art Trail ranges all across Lubbock. From the Buddy Holly Center to the Underwood Center in downtown Lubbock over to the Texas Tech Museum it stretches over the city. I have been before but had not been in several months. The last time I spent much of my time in the Underwood Center. However, this time I was in the Texas Tech Museum.

I would like to say I was astute in studying the artwork, but alas I must admit I barely looked at any artwork.  The only art I really looked at was the Jades and Ivories collection in the Diamond M Gallery.  There were fantastic pieces from the middle of the 19th century up to and until the early parts of the 20th century.  The majority of the pieces came from Japan and China but they had pieces from all across Asia.  It was a fantastic showing but soon lost my attention as I noticed Playtime Memories exhibit.

Playtime is important no matter what the age. The games and rules may change as we get older but there is always a place for “play.”  The Playtime Memories exhibit collects toys of previous generations with key wound cars and old tea sets.  Board games are even included with an antique Monopoly set.  My favorites are the old little tin soldiers.  That I shall admit a small part of me wanted to grab some of the soldiers and run to the new Discovering Pterosaurs.  When I had somehow found myself, sadly I was tin soldier free.

I wandered about aimlessly just going through the museum, as I hadn’t been since the Vatican Art Exhibit years ago.  It was fun discovering things I hadn’t seen before, including the Shave and a Haircut exhibit.  It had just opened (last week) so I was one of the first to see it.  First Friday Art Trail doesn’t have to just be about the art, but it is better with the art mixed in.  It’s a fun and free way to spend a Friday night.  It also allows you to go places in Lubbock you have possibly never gone or possibly didn’t know were there.  Get out and enjoy it.  Coming in October the Texas Tech Museum will be housing a new exhibition of Rembrandt etchings.  I certainly will go to see it while it’s here.
