Freshman Profile: Natalie Tyler
Natalie Tyler is not your typical Lubbock Christian University freshman. There are many things that set her apart from the rest of her class. Natalie has a very diverse background and a wide range of life experiences that many people will never encounter. What makes her so unique is the fact that she grew up in Kenya and Uganda. I was able to sit down with Natalie and ask her about her life in Africa and about her new life here at LCU.

Natalie Tyler brings a plethora of experiences to LCU as a freshman this fall.
Natalie was born in Amarillo, and then adopted into a missionary family. She lived in Kenya until her third birthday, and then her family moved to Uganda where they still live. When Natalie was in the eighth grade, she went to a boarding school in Kenya, called Rift Valley Academy. She moved to the states for her ninth and 10
th grade years, where she was enrolled in an online school in Dallas. Then she finished her high school career at RVA. While in boarding school, Natalie was a member of the choir, the soccer team, the Big Sisters program, Outreach, which is a group that does service projects for the community, and she was also involved with prison trips to Naivasha, where they would minister to the inmates. At RVA, Natalie lived in a dormitory, which she feels has prepared her for dorm life in college, even though it is quite different here. The LCU dorm is much bigger and more relaxed than her boarding school dorm. While in school, she enjoyed studying foreign languages. She is only fluent in English, but she knows several different languages including: Swahili, Spanish, Arabic, French and American Sign Language.
Like most freshman, Natalie is really looking forward to her college years at LCU. She is a member of the JV soccer team and praise choir. She is also deciding on whether or not she wants to join a social club, it just depends on where she feels like God is leading her. Currently she hasn’t decided on a major, but she would ultimately like to seek a career in International Business. After college, she wants to open a resort on the coast of Kenya, Mombasa, or Malindi.
She has enjoyed her time in the states so far, even though it has been quite a culture shock moving to America. She really loves how everything is so accessible here. Her family has been supported in their mission work by Quaker Avenue Church of Christ for 30 years, so she has really enjoyed getting to know some of the members there. Another good thing about living in Lubbock? Her older brother, Noah, is here. This is the first time that she has seen Noah in two years, and she was able to meet his fiancée, Courtney Volk. Also, her parents are living in Lubbock for the next five months. Natalie is really excited about this, because this is the first time in several years that her whole family has been together.
So, if you see Natalie walking around campus, stop and talk to her! She has a lot of cool stories about growing up in Africa, and it is always good to gain knowledge about other cultures.
