Music Review: Kina Grannis
“Message From Your Heart” is not only the title of the 11th song you’ll find on singer/song writer Kina Grannis’ fourth album titled “Stairwells;” it is also the best way to summarize her songs. Her songs seem to come directly from her heart as she sings about love, heartache, and life. She’s not as well known as artists who have had the success of landing a song on the Billboard Hot 100, but she is one of the few who can translate her feelings directly into her songs. At the very least one of the songs will speak to you, if not all.

Kina Grannis' latest work, "Stairwells," straight from the heart.
You’ll find yourself humming and singing along to her songs and eventually falling in love with them. Unlike her previous albums, “Stairwells” is a little more polished but keeps the same simplicity she started with. She doesn’t need a whole lot of extra studio spice and magic, she’s simply amazing with just her voice and guitar. The songs are simple, almost acoustic, and have the most impact that way.
My favorite songs so far are “World In Front Of Me,” “In Your Arms,” “Valentine,” “Heart and Mind,” “Cambridge,” “Message From Your Heart,” and “Stay Just A Little.” I would encourage anyone to check them all out, of course, and then take a look at the others I left out.
“World In Front Of Me” is what I like to call a perfect morning song. It’s just a happy upbeat song that makes me want to enjoy the day, especially because listening to it can put you in that happy mood you need to get through a long morning.
“In Your Arms” is a simple, cute love song that anyone could enjoy with his or her significant other.
“Valentine” is a song I plan on listening to all day long next Valentine’s Day. I think it’s the first song I’ve ever heard that explains exactly how I feel about that day. It doesn’t need to be a day where expensive extravagant gifts are given, even though those are nice as well, but instead just a day where you take the time to express your love to that special person if only for that one day.
“Heart and Mind” is the song for the people who have ever hidden from love and then realized they couldn’t hide any longer.“Cambridge” is the tearjerker. The song is the first person perspective of being in love with someone and waiting for him or her to either love you back or let you know that it’s time to finally let go.
“Message From Your Heart” is by far the main song that stands out to me in the album. It’s a first person perspective from a heart asking to be taken care of because of all it does for you. It’s unique because it describes how a heart might feel when being put in different situations, whether it is love, heartache, or anything between.
The final song I like titled “Stay Just A Little” is another sad breakup song. The song is a strong one because of the fact that it’s so simple. All you hear in the background is a guitar and piano, which allows her voice to convey the message of heartache of being left and wanting the person to stay and give her a chance to fill the hole they left. All in all, the album is great! Her voice is amazing, the background music is simple, and the lyrics to the songs are strong and poetic. She isn’t churning out any Top 40 hits just yet, but it’s only a matter of time before more people start to pick her albums up and request her music be played.
